How sub-meters work
WHAT TYPES OF METERS ARE THERE?There are 2 types of meters; Primary meters and Sub-meters.
Every property in South Africa has a municipal primary meter. It is installed by the supplier of the utility (like Eskom) and is the main utility meter for the entire property. (Utility means water, electricity or gas.) It measures the total consumption of the whole property.
Sub-meters are used when the property owner has many tenants (like cottages) on the property so that he can record each tenant’s usage of their utility.
HOW DOES PAYMENT WORK?
There are 2 types of payments, post-paid or prepaid
Post-paid metering means you pay after you have used the utility (like a month-end bill).
Prepaid metering means you pay for the utility before you use it.
You purchase utility tokens, load them onto the sub-meter and the available credit decreases according to the amount used.
WHERE DO SUB-METERS COME IN?
